MY STORY
Bigger isn't always better.
My journey in construction started straight from school. I began as an apprentice carpenter, completing my training before moving into loft conversions at around 18. That's where I really learned the industry from the ground up.
Within a few years I'd started my first construction company. It grew steadily, year after year, until we were delivering more than 10–15 major projects annually. As it grew, my role changed — I came off the tools and spent the next ten years overseeing multiple projects at once, managing project managers, coordinating trades and running the financial side of the business. At one stage I had four project managers, each running several projects, while I oversaw the wider operation.
Construction should never become just about volume.
As the business got larger, I found myself firefighting more than building — travelling between sites solving problems, with less and less time for any individual client. Every homeowner sees their project as hugely important, and rightly so. For many people, an extension or renovation is one of the biggest investments they'll ever make. They deserve someone who genuinely understands their project from start to finish.
From construction to property development
I slowed the original business down and spent four to five years developing property instead — buying sites and delivering multi-property schemes and new-build homes from the ground up. It taught me how every decision, on design, cost, programme and quality, affects the finished result. But I missed construction itself — working with tradespeople, solving problems on site, seeing a project come together from the first conversation to completion.
Why Blackthorn Developments
Blackthorn brings together everything I've learned over nearly two decades in construction and property — but I've deliberately chosen not to build a large-volume company again. I've built a skilled team of carpenters and multi-traders around me, so we can take on a carefully managed number of projects at any one time. Whatever the project, you deal directly with me, from initial planning through to completion.
Good construction isn't just about building what's on a drawing — it's about understanding how a project actually comes together, planning ahead, coordinating trades properly and making sure your budget is spent where it delivers the greatest benefit.
